COME TO MY HOUSE AND STAY
“And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, ‘If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.’ And she prevailed upon us.” Acts 16:15 (ESV)
In the sixteenth chapter of the book of Acts, Paul and Silas set out on their second missionary journey. They came to the city of Philippi, a major city of Macedonia. While there they met a group of women gathered at the river on the Sabbath for prayer. Present was a merchant woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia. As Paul preached, the Lord opened her heart in a powerful way and she believed on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. The scripture says that Lydia and her household were baptized.
Her entire household was saved. The Lord does not just save individuals but he saves households. If just one member of a family opens their heart to the Lord it can make an eternal impact in an entire family. I think back to the mid-seventies when my own sister, Patty, accepted Jesus as her Savior. It was not long after that my oldest sister Linda, through the influence of Patty, also accepted Christ in her life. Well, the dominoes began to fall. My mother and brother went to a Christian film at a little church down the street called A Thief in the Night. That night they also accepted Christ and within two years myself, two more sisters, and my father all came into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as our Lord.
I believe salvation is for entire households. God’s plan is a family plan. When God opens up a heart and a person comes under the influence of the Holy Spirit accepting the gospel of Jesus Christ, anything can happen. God can work in your family. Believe. Receive. Be baptized. Attend upon the things of the Lord and see what God can do. You have eternal influence—husbands, wives, children, parents—all ripe for the Kingdom of God.
Practical Application: Accept Christ in your heart today. If you have not yet been water baptized speak to your church leaders and don’t put it off any longer. Attend to the things that you are hearing from God’s ministers and believe that a harvest in your family is coming.
