For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.—Isaiah 9:6
Throughout the Bible, Jesus is referred to by more than 200 names and titles. Some names relate to His identity—the Word of God, the Alpha and Omega, the Lion of Judah. Others relate to His ministry—the Bridegroom, the Rock. Still more describe His authority—Lord, Chief Shepherd, Rabbi. Then there are titles that emphasize His work of salvation—Passover Lamb, Man of Sorrows, Deliverer, Redeemer.
Isaiah prophesies of a holy Child, a Son, who was to be born. His authority and Lordship is affirmed by the words, “the government will be upon His shoulder.” There will come a time when Christ will reign over the entire earth, literally.
His name is Wonderful—He inspires delight, pleasure and admiration. He is extremely good…marvelous, magnificent, glorious, sublime. One reference indicates that the word Wonderful in this context means incomprehensible. Oh, how amazingly true!
As Counselor, we rely on Jesus for His wisdom, His guidance and direction…and His role as mediator between us and Father God. If He is on our side, who can stand against us?
He is truly our Mighty God—our Everlasting Father—as Philippians 2:6-7 says: “He (Jesus) existed in the form of God, and did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.”
Because of the sacrifice He made on our behalf, we are at peace with God, our heavenly Father. When we rely on Him as Counselor, we can be at peace with each other. When we submit to Him as Mighty God and Everlasting Father, we are blessed with peace in our souls. Thank You, Jesus, our Prince of Peace.
